Aftercare Instructions

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.

  • Spray your piercing with sterile saline solution 2 times a day with the recommend Neilmed piercing aftercare. Please remove all crusties or discharge after soaking with sterile saline solution or warm water with a folded piece of paper towel to a point. Over cleaning can irritate and prolong your healing.

  • Avoid harsh cleaning products that have active ingredients like alcohol, bactine, hydrogen peroxide and polysporin. These are not intended for long term wound care and will dry out your piercing(s).  This will prolong your healing.

  • Do not touch or play with your jewelry. Avoid moving or twisting your jewelry as to not disrupt the healing tissue on the inside of the piercing. Do not pick at your dried crusties with your fingers. We have bacteria on our hands that we do not want to come into contact with our healing piercing(s).

  • Avoid causing trauma to your piercing by not sleeping on it,  avoid moving or playing with the jewelry, avoid friction from or getting caught on clothing and snagging it on hair. Be careful when combing hair not to snag it on your jewelry. Gently bend you ear to create a clear path when combing. For navel piercings, avoid wearing high waisted pants or jeans and belt buckles as to not cause unnecessary trauma. Trauma can lead to problematic healing, migration and potentially rejection (failure of the piercing).

  • It is important to downsize your jewelry to avoid causing trauma. Once you have gotten passed your initial healing, it is not necessary to have the initial jewelry that allows the room for swelling to occur during the initial stages of your healing process.   I will provide you with the downsize date at the time of your appointment so that you may return to get you fitted jewelry. This will help with decreasing the risk of getting your jewelry caught causing unnecessary trauma to your piercing.

  • Avoid having your piercing come into contact with pet dander and hair as it can cause irritation. If you have pets or animals at home avoid having them sleep on the bed or lying down in the same areas as they are.

  • Avoid oral contact and others bodily fluids on or around your piercing(s).

  • Avoid submerging your piercing into any resting body of water for at least 4-6 months as it contains bacteria and microorganisms that are harmful to the healing of your piercing. Things that fall in this category are pools, hot tubs, lakes, oceans and baths. Running water like showers are fine.

  • Avoid personal care and beauty products from coming in contact with your piercing. This includes cosmetic products, lotions and sprays.

  • For oral piercing care, rinse with salt water after eating, drinking and smoking.
